Kelsey doesnât answer the phone when I call, so I leave a voicemail explaining who I am and saying that I just spoke with Caroline and Edgar. They described their relationship with Catherineâs best friend as being close enough that she referred to them as Mom and Dad, so I figure name-dropping them will give me some extra credibility. If anything, she might contact them to find out who I am and what I want. After that, it would be up to her whether she is willing to talk to me.
Iâm not left in suspense for long. It seems that she checked her voicemail as soon as I left it because within moments, Kelsey calls me back.
âHiâ, she says. âIâm Kelsey McIntosh. You just called me.â
âHi, Kelsey,â I say. âIâm Emma. Thank you for calling me back.â
âYou said itâs about Catherine,â she says. Thereâs a slight tremble in her voice. I canât see her face, but I can imagine it has the same kind of anticipation and hope as her parents did when they first spoke to me.
I know what it feels like to wait for information about a missing loved one. I know what it feels like to wake up every morning wondering if itâs going to be the day when you finally find out something and then go to bed every night feeling empty and lost. For a decade, I felt that way about my father.
He disappeared the day after I turned eighteen, and I spent every day after wondering what happened to him and where he was. Anytime there was even the slightest hint that there could be new information, I latched on to it with every bit of my being. Even when I wouldnât say it out loud, I was hopeful and yet broken.
I explain to Kelsey the same thing I did to Caroline and Edgar, and I hear the long exhale of disappointment and grief.
âI already talked to her parents, but I know the two of you were extremely close. I was hoping you would be willing to talk to me about her,â I say.
âWhat do you wanna know?â she asks.
I listen as she describes their friendship, the tight bond between the two of them that started when they were in high school and never lessened. Her voice becomes heavier when she talks about her divorce and the extremely difficult time she went through as she struggled to extricate herself from her controlling and emotionally abusive ex-husband. The way she talks about Catherine supporting her and being there for her throughout the entire experience assures me that Catherineâs parents were right. She would never have abandoned Kelsey. If she did decide to start a new life, it would have been with her best friend right by her side.
Kelsey gives me the same information about Stuart Franklin that Catherineâs parents did and the same staunch declaration that Catherine did not steal anything and would never have hurt the elderly man she bonded with.
âWhat happened the last day you saw her? I ask.
